This special report, the final installment of a three-part series on e-learning, examines how schools are working to create high-quality digital curricula and online courses. It covers the infl uence the commoncore standards are likely to have on building the online curricula of the future, the growing emphasis on teaching social skills to virtual school students, how schools are building courses that blend face-to-face and online learning, and the evolving role of e-assessments.

The release of this report comes at an important time. Questions and concerns about the quality of e-curricula continue to grow as online learning expands in K-12 schools. Just last month, the Digital Learning Council鈥攁n organization established in August by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise鈥攊ssued a report recommending, among other measures, that states make sure 鈥渁ll students have access to high-quality digital content and online courses.鈥

Making that happen, of course, will be a challenging task.
